Abstract

A method of making weldable carbon steel having a grain size smaller than 5 on the A.S.T.M. rating comprises raising the active nitrogen content to over 0.005% in aluminium-killed open-hearth steel by the addition of nitrogen to the steel. The nitrogen may be added in the ladle or mould by the addition of a manganese-nitrogen alloy containing 95% Mn. The steel may contain 0.35% max C: 1.2% max Mn: up to 0.35% Si: up to 0.05% each of S and P: the balance being iron and an active nitrogen content of more than 0.005%. It is stated that the steel has an impact transition temperature below 0 DEG C. and a high resistance to creep.
