Abstract

903,686. Washing gas. UNITED STEEL COS. Ltd. Dec. 21, 1960 [Sept. 22, 1959], No. 32262/59. Class 55 (2). Fumes evolved during steel-making and containing iron oxide particles and watersoluble substances, are passed as very fine bubbles into a body of water contained in a vessel from which water is withdrawn, treated by magnetic means to remove suspended iron oxide particles and returned to the vessel. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 the iron oxide containing fume enters a vessel 1 through an inlet 6 and is converted into fine bubbles by an impeller, comprising a squirrel cage 3, rotating at high speed on a shaft 4 in a body of water and an outer cylinderical stator 2 made up of tubes. Perforated vanes 12 may be attached to the stator and water to be freed from sus- . pended iron oxide particles is withdrawn at 9 and the clarified water returned at 10. More than one impeller may be arranged in parallel working with a common magnetic device for removing iron oxide particles from withdrawn water. Depressants which preferably also reduce the surface tension of the water may be added to the water in the vessel 1. Additions of sodium sulphite or causticized starch to washing water are referred to.
