Abstract

A web is composed of waterlaid papermaking cellulose fibres uniformly carrying on at least the surface of the fibres between 25% and 300% based on the weight of the fibres and preferably 50%-150%, of polymerized methyl methacrylate directly connected to the cellulose by a carbon-to-carbon linkage. The web may include up to about 15% by weight of the methyl methacrylate present of a reacted content of other polymers, such as acrylonitrile methyl and ethyl acrylate, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride units. According to an example, a stock emulsion, prepared by emulsifying 6,5 parts by weight of monomeric methyl methacrylate in 100 parts of water containing 0,05% by weight of dimethyloctadecyl benzyl ammonium chloride and purged of air by nitrogen, was run into a closed treating vessel containing paper supported on a stainless steel rod, the amount of emulsion containing several times the weight of methyl methacrylate to be reacted. Ceric ammonium sulphate catalyst solution was run in with gentle agitation in such amount as to make the emulsion 0,005 molar in ceric ion, the pH was reduced below 2 by addition of nitric acid, and the contents of the vessel were gently agitated. Reaction times of 10, 15, 30 and 70 minutes employed in four experiments yielded paper containing 56, 100, 193 and 280% of its weight of methyl methacrylate. Other catalysts mentioned are ceric ammonium nitrate and cobaltic sulphate. Specification 886,552 is referred to.
