Abstract

A mixture of from 80-92 per cent of vinylidene chloride and from 20-8 per cent acrylonitrile is polymerized in aqueous emulsion or by granular, bulk or solution methods to form a copolymer suitable for making moisture-proof film. Catalysts, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, or ammonium persulphate with sodium metabisulphite as activator; dispersing agents, e.g. ammonium octadecyl sulphate, sodium cetyl sulphate and sodium octadecenyl sulphate; and stabilizers, e.g. dodecyl toluene sulphonic acid may be used, the reaction being promoted by heat or light. A self-supporting film may be prepared from an aqueous emulsion by depositing on an oppositely charged nickel sheet, drying, stripping and consolidating by heat.
