Abstract

Aqueous dispersions of terpolymers are made by emulsifying a mixture of 80 per cent of vinylidene chloride, between 0.1 and 2.5 per cent of an acidic ethylenic compound and acrylonitrile in an aqueous medium containing a modifying compound of the formula <FORM:0674728/IV (a)/1> wherein R and R1 are hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical, e.g. methyl isobutyl ketone, and, as dispersing agent, 3 to 6 per cent, based on the mixture of monomers, of a water-dispersible alkyl sulphate, containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium cetyl sulphate, sodium octadecyl sulphate and "Teepol" (Registered Trade Mark) and subjecting to polymerizing temperatures, e.g. 40 DEG C. The acidic ethylenic compound may be citraconic or itaconic acid or anhydrides thereof, mesaconic acid, acrylic acid or a mixture of acid anhydrides comprising citraconic and itaconic anhydrides formed by distilling citric acid. Catalysts, e.g. ammonium persulphate and activators, e.g. sodium metabisulphite, may be present. The product may be isolated by coagulation, e.g. by addition of alkali metal or ammonium sulphate, evaporation or electrophoresis. Films of regenerated cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose esters or ethers, gelatin and casein may be coated with the terpolymer in aqueous dispersion or in solution in methyl ethyl ketone or a mixture thereof with toluene or tetrahydrofurane.
