Abstract

An aqueous dispersion of a vinylidene chloride copolymer is made by polymerizing an emulsified monomeric mixture of 90 parts by weight of vinylidene chloride and 10 parts of another ethylenic monomer in an aqueous medium in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, e.g. a redox system and a mixture of dispersing agents comprising at least one water-soluble or water-dispersible alkali metal salt or ammonium salt of a long straight-chain alkyl or alkylene sulphate or sulphonate, or an n-alkyl aryl sulphonate which contains between 12 and 30 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical, and a water-soluble or water-dispersible condensation product of formaldehyde with a naphthalene sulphonic and/or alkyl substituted naphthalene sulphonic acid or with an alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof. The other monomer may be acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methyl, ethyl, butyl, or isobutyl acrylate, or methacrylate, methyl vinyl ketone, vinyl chloride, or vinyl acetate. If desired the emulsified monomeric mixture may contain a very minor amount of citraconic acid or anhydride, itaconic acid or anhydride, or mixtures. The specified catalyst is a mixture of ammonium persulphate and sodium metabisulphite. Dispersing agents mentioned are sodium cetyl sulphate, ammonium octadecyl sulphate, sodium n-dodecyl benzene sulphonate, and condensates of formaldehyde and sodium naphthalene beta-sulphonate or sodium isopropylnaphthalene beta - sulphonate. The aqueous copolymer dispersion may be used for making self-supporting films and for coating organic, non-fibrous hydrophilic sheet materials. Specification 693,496 is referred to.
