Abstract

Copolymers of vinyl chloride and styrene, completely soluble in acetone and ethyl acetate, are made by adding styrene to an aqueous medium containing a water-soluble persulphate, a water-soluble sulphite, a dispersing agent and vinyl chloride, the amount of styrene added being in the range of 1 to 10 per cent of the total weight of the monomers, styrene being added continuously or periodically during copolymerization to maintain its concentration within the above range. Dispersing agents specified are the fatty acid soaps, sodium lauryl sulphate, isopropyl naphthalene sodium sulphonate, decyl benzene sulphonate, sodium petroleum sulphonates, the sodium salts of sulphonated naphthalene-aldehyde condensates, the sodium salt of n-octadecyl-N-1,2-dicarboxy ethyl sulphosuccinamate, the dioctyl ester of sodium sulphosuccinic acid, and rosin and dehydrogenated rosin soaps. Potassium, sodium and ammonium persulphates are specified as suitable persulphates, and potassium, sodium and ammonium sulphites as suitable sulphites. The aqueous medium preferably contains only a portion of the catalyst mixture, additional catalyst mixture or the sulphite alone being added to the reaction mixture at about the mid-point of the copolymerization cycle. The copolymers are soluble also in methyl ethyl ketone, dioxane, benzene, toluene, and chlorobenzene, and may be mixed with plasticizers such as di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, fillers such as carbon black, and lead stearate as stabilizer. The products are suitable for forming into sheets.
