Abstract

A pellicle or film of non-fibrous regenerated cellulose uniformly carrying at least 15% by weight of a substantially linear vinyl or vinylidene homopolymer or copolymer which is chemically and directly connected to the cellulose, is made by impregnating regenerated cellulose film, preferably in a wet swollen gel state, with an aqueous solution containing 1 to 10% of a free radical initiator based on the weight of the cellulose and contacting, under graft polymerization conditions, the activated film with one or more vinyl or vinylidene monomers until at least 15% based on the weight of the film has grafted thereon. The monomers grafted on to the film may be acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, an acrylic ester in which the alcohol residue is obtained from methanol, octadecanol, dimethylaminoethanol, benzyl alcohol, or p-chloromethylbenzyl alcohol, vinyl or vinylidene chloride, methyl vinyl ether, acrylamide, isoprene, ethylene, butadiene, or chloroprene. The grafted film may be after-treated to introduce new groups into the linear polymer chains, e.g. a film containing acrylamide units may be subjected to a Hofmann degradation to change the acrylamide units into amine units, or acrylonitrile units may be converted into -CH2-C(NH)-(NHOH) units by treatment with hydroxylamine, or units containing tertiary amines, may be quaternized, or ester units may be converted to alcohol units by hydrolysis. The polymerization initiator may be cobaltic sulphate, ceric ammonium sulphate or nitrate, manganic pyrophosphate, NaClO2, Na5IO6, Mn2(SO4)3, MnCl3, NaBrO3, or KBrO3. The monomers may be reacted with the film in the gaseous, liquid, or solid state. The graft polymerization may be effected in bulk or solvent, or aqueous solution or emulsion. Prior to teartment, the cellulose film has had all solubles, including the glycerol plasticizer, removed. Monomers exemplified are acrylamide, acrylonitrile, stearyl methacrylate mixed with ethyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate mixed with dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate nitrate solution, butyl acrylate mixed with ethylene glycol bismethacrylate, vinyl chloride, methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate. The films may be decorated, printed, or dyed, and they may be used as a packaging material or as an outer ply in the manufacture of plywood. (see Group VIII).
