Abstract

1306536 Graft polymers FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO 12 March 1970 [17 March 1969] 12037/70 Heading C3G A vinyl chloride polymer is prepared by polymerizing vinyl chloride in the presence of 0À01 to 0À5 part by weight, per 100 parts of vinyl chloride, of a mercapto-free butadiene polymer having at least 70% by weight of butadiene therein and from 85 to 95% by weight of the butadiene portion comprising repeating units having a pendant vinyl group, said butadiene polymer having a molecular weight of 600 to 50,000 and the polymerization being effected at 30‹ to 70‹ C. In examples, polybutadiene is present during (a) the polymerization of vinyl chloride, alone or together with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, ethyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate, by an aqueous suspension or emulsion process, (b) polymerization of vinyl chloride in solution in chlorobenzene or (c) bulk polymerization of vinyl chloride. The resulting polymers are blended with dioctyl phthalate and lead diphthalate.
