Abstract

1360665 Graft polymerization process INSTITUT TEXTILE DE FRANCE 25 Nov 1971 [25 Nov 1970] 54862/71 Heading C3G A graft polymerization process comprises (a) impregnating the polymer to be grafted with a solution in a first solvent of an activating agent capable of producing free radicals on the polymer chain and, after separating the impregnated polymer from the solution of the activating agent, (b) grafting the impregnated polymer by contacting it with a solution in a second solvent of a monomer of low volatility having a limited solubility in the first solvent. Preferably the first solvent is water, the second solvent is an organic solvent immiscible in all proportions with water, or aqueous acetic acid, and the activating agent is a ceric salt. In the examples, (a) cotton fabric or ground cellulose linters are impregnated with a ceric ammonium sulphate/sulphuric acid solution and grafted with acrylic acid in benzene; (b) formalized polyvinyl alcohol fabric is impregnated as in (a) and grafted with acrylic acid in benzene saturated with water; (c) cotton poplin is impregnated as in (a) and grafted with methyl acrylate in hexane containing acetic acid or in carbon disulphide, or with acrylamide in benzene/acetonitrile/acetic acid; (d) polyvinyl alcohol film is impregnated with a solution of ceric ammonium sulphate and sodium sulphate in sulphuric acid and grafted as in (a); (e) nylon is swollen in formic acid/water, impregnated and grafted as in (a); and (f) cotton poplin is impregnated with a ceric ammonium nitrate/nitric acid solution and grafted in an aqueous acetic acid solution with 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or a mixture thereof with acrylamide or acrylonitrile.
