Abstract

Process for modifying the affinity of polyacrylonitrile (I) fibres to basic dyes by applying a 1-10 wt.% aqs. soln. (at 20-70 degrees C) of a quaternary ammonium salt (II), having a >=10 C alkyl chain, to the fibres when in the gel state after the spinning stage. (I) is a copolymer of acrylonitrile and a monomer (itaconic acid) containing free acid (or ester) groups. The process is carried out in the same bath as normally used for treatment of fibres with basic dyes, giving economies in production. Fibres with good affinity for acid dyes are produced.
