Abstract
1377200 Porous acrylic fibres MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 14 Dec 1971 [21 May 1971] 57964/71 Heading B5B Porous acrylic fibres are produced by a process where (a) an aqua-gel fibre which has not been subjected to drying or heating and which contains pores with an average radius of at most 3000Š and which has a void content of at least 0À15 cc. per gram of the dried fibre, is treated with a water soluble material to fill the pores partially. with 3 to 30% by weight of it, based on the dried fibre, (b) subjecting the fibre to drying and heat treatment and then (c) washing the fibre with water to remove at least a part of the material from the pores and so to reform them in the finished fibre. The acrylic fibres exemplified are copolymers of acrylonitrile with such as vinyl acetate, vinyl bromide, methyl acrylate and sulphonated monomers such as sodium vinylbenzenesulphonate and sodium methylallylsulphonate. Two or more polymers may be mixed. The water-soluble compound must be selected from the following: a polyhydric alcohol, a water-soluble non-ionic cationic, or anionic. or amphoteric surface active agent, an amino acid, a polyamino acid, a monosaccharide, an oligosaccharide, a polysaccharide, a watersoluble organic acid or the metal salts or acid anhydride of such an acid, a water-soluble ketone, a water-soluble amine, a salt of a strong inorganic acid, a weak inorganic acid or the ammonium or metal salts of such an acid, a water-soluble polyfunctional unsaturated compound having a polyethylene glycol chain, a mixture of a water-soluble polyamine with a water-soluble epoxy compound having at least two epoxy groups and polyethylene glycol, a mixture of a water-soluble polyfunctional unsaturated compound having a polyethylene glycol chain and a water-soluble monofunctional compound having a polyethylene glycol sidechain, a mixture of a water-soluble polyfunction unsaturated compound having a polyethylene glycol chain and polyethylene glycol, and a mixture of a water-soluble polyfunctional unsaturated compound having a polyethylene glycol chain, a water-soluble monofunctional compound having a polyethylene glycol side chain and polyethylene glycol.
