Abstract
Cellulosic materials such as paper, pulp etc. are internally sized by treatment with (1) an internal sizing agent comprising a copolymer of an alpha,beta-ethylenically unsatd. hydrophobic monomer with an ammonia-treated alpha,beta-ethylenically unsatd. carboxylic acid, whereby the copolymer is dispersible in water but insoluble in water and alkalis, and (2) a retention aid comprising a water-dispersible reaction prod. of an epihal hydrin and ammonia, an alkylamine or aliphatic polyamine with >=2 amino H atoms per mol or a mixt. of these. Paper etc. can be treated in weekly acid neutral or alkaline conditions, and mild drying and curing conditions are sufficient to achieve full sizing efficiency. Treated products have good wet strength and resistance to avid and alkaline solutions.
