Abstract

Paper with improved strength is obtained by treating the paper slurry ("white water") of the sheets of paper with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble copolymer. The monomers are (1) an alpha,beta-alkenically unsaturated carboxamide, (2) an alpha, beta - unsaturated carboxamide derivative of the formula CH2=CR-CONHCH2OR', where R is H or CH3 and R' is H or 1-4C alkyl, and (4) possibly a winyl monomer which can be copolymerised with the other monomers. The copolymer solution can be stored as a solution with a solids content of up to 30 weight %. The solution can be diluted to any required concentration. When waste paper is to be re-used, the copolymer can easily be removed by the usual treatments, such, as by treatment with NaOH.
