Abstract
1341972 Treating sludges IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 April 1971 [8 May 1970] 22350/70 Heading C1C A method of dewatering sewage sludges comprises as a flocculating step, treating a sewage sludge with a copolymer in which from 99-20% by wt. of the repeating units are of the formula where R = hydrogen or methyl, R<SP>1</SP> = methyl or ethyl and R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> = methyl or ethyl or R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> taken together = CH 2 CH 2 OCH 2 CH 2 or -(CH 2 ) n - where n = 4, 5 or 6, A = alkylene radical having 2 or 3 C atoms, X- = monovalent anion (e.g. chloride, bromide or methosulphate), the remaining 1-80% by wt. of the repeating units being derived from styrene, substituted styrene or a non quaternary acrylic or methacrylic ester. The treated sludge may be subjected to vacuum or pressure filtration, floatation or centrifugation. The copolymer may be added in dry form or as an aqueous solution.
