Abstract

1341971 Treating sludges IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 April 1971 [8 May 1970] 22349/70 Heading C1C A method of dewatering sewage sludges comprises as a flocculating step, treating a sewage sludge with a copolymer in which from 90-1% by wt. of the repeating units are of the formula where R = hydrogen or methyl, R<SP>1</SP> = methyl or ethyl and R<SP>2</SP> = methyl or ethyl and R<SP>3</SP> = ethyl or R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> taken together = -CH 2 CH 2 OCH 2 - CH 2 - or -(CH 2 ) n - where n = 4, 5 or 6, A = alkylene radical having 2 or 3 C atoms, and X = monovalent anion (e.g. chloride, bromide or methosulphate), the remaining 1-99% by wt. of the repeating units being derived from acrylamide or methacrylamide. The treated sludge may be subjected to vaccuum or pressure filtration, floatation or centrifugation. The copolymer may be added in dry form or as an aqueous solution.
