Abstract
1373034 Treating water and sewage sludges ALLIED COLLOIDS Ltd 31 Jan 1972 [24 Feb 1971] 5347/71 Heading C1C [Also in Division C3] Sewage sludge and waste waters are treated with a flocculating agent which is a watersoluble polymer containing 60% or more of units of the formula in which R1 is H or methyl, R2 is lower alkyl, R3 and R4 are lower alkyl, hydroxy lower alkyl or together with the N atom to which they are attached form a cyclic ring system, X is an anion and Z is an integer. A typical polymer is one prepared by first reacting polyacrylamide with formaldehyde and diethylamine to form poly-[N-(aminomethyl)-acrylamide] and then quaternizing this by reaction with either dimthyl sulphate or methyl chloride. In examples, such polymers are used in the treatment of a sewage sludge derived from an anaerobic digestion process, a sludge derived by settlement of waste water from a food factory dealing with vegetable processing, and a paper mill effluent which may have been pretreated with aluminium sulphate.
