Abstract

In the sulphite cooking of wood, formic ester(s) (I) of the formula HCOOR (in which R is hexyl or an unsubstd. or methyl-substd. norbornyl gp) is added to the liquor before impregnation of the wood with this liquor in an amt. >=0.02 pref. >=0.1 mole/tonne abs. dry wood, HCOOH pref. is also added in an amt. =25% of the wt. of (I). (I) pref. is dispersed in water, using a non-ionic dispersant, before addn. The yield and strength of the cellulose obtd. are increased.
