Abstract

1505070 Bleaching lignocellnlosic material CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 June 1975 [11 June 1974] 25845/74 Heading D1P In a process for bleaching lignocellulosic material, the material is contacted in an aqueous medium with a mixture of nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide wherein the nitric oxide component is in molar excess in respect of nitrogen dioxide, then washed with water and then contacted with alkaline material in the presence of water. Nitric oxide is used at a pressure ranging from atmospheric to 200p.s.i., 0.5% to 10.0% by weight based on the cellulosic material of nitrogen dioxide is used. The different procedures employed to produce nitrogen oxides including one in which nitric oxide is used are listed in the specification. The nitrogen oxides treatment is carried at a temperature ranging from room temperature to 120‹C, 1.0% to 6.0% by weight of alkali or alkaline Earth base such as sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, may constitute the alkaline treatment which is carried out for 10 to 180mins. at 30-90‹C in the presence of water. Alternatively an alkaline oxygen medium in the presence of water is used. The medium may contain oxygen or oxygen containing gas, such as air, at a partial pressure of oxygen of 30 to 200p.s.i. and used at a temperature ranging from 80‹C - 200‹C for 10-60mins. The medium also contains an alkali or alkaline earth base. The above steps may be followed by qonventional bleaching steps such as chlorine treatment wherein 0.5%- 1.5% by weight of chlorine dioxide is used to treat the material for 60-300mins. at 60- 80‹C followed by caustic extraction using 0.25-2.0% of base for 60-120mins. at 40‹ - 70‹C and followed by a second chlorine dioxide treatment. In each case the material is washed with water. An alkaline oxygen treatment in aqueous medium may precede the nitrogen oxides treatment. Various other treating combinations using oxygen, peroxide, hypochlorite, chlorine and chlorine dioxide, may be employed. These are listed in the specification including the examples. The material may be wood pulp, bagasse or straw.
