Abstract

Delignification of lignocellulose material (I) involves (a) treatment of (I) with nitrogen dioxide (II) in an aq. medium; (b) washing with water; (c) treatment with alkali in aq. medium; and (d) treatment with (gas contg) oxygen above atmos. press. (I) (consistency 3.0-50 wt. %) is treated with 0.5-10.0% (II) for 5-60 min. at 20-120 degrees C, then with 1.0-20.0 wt. % base and with 0 at a partial press. of 2.1-140 kg/cm2 for 10-60 min at 80 degrees C. These stages can be followed by chlorine (dioxide), alkali and chloride dioxide treatment). Used for the delignification of wood pulp (esp. kraft or soda pulp), bagasse, straw etc. Environmental pollution is reduced, since no Cl cpds. are present in the liquor from stages (a) and (d). High yields are obtd.
