Abstract

1,262,655. Bleaching lignocellulose. CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 Nov., 1969 [20 Sept., 1968], No. 44904/68. Heading DIP. Lignocellulose, e.g. sulphate or sulphite wood pulp, is bleached by (1) the simultaneous or successive action of chlorine dioxide and chlorine while in aqueous acidic suspension, followed by (2) treatment with gaseous oxygen in an alkaline medium at super-atmospheric pressure and (3) washing with water. The oxygen partial pressure in step (2) may be 30-200 psi, the gas being derived e.g. from high pressure air, pure oxygen or a chemical oxygen source such as H 2 O 2 . The alkali may be NaOH, KOH, Ca(OH) 2 , Na 2 CO 3 or K 2 CO 3 to which MgCO 3 or MgO may be added. The pulp may be subjected to additional bleaching steps with chlorine or precursors thereof and/or with oxygen. In step (1) ammonia or a salt thereof, e.g. NH 4 Cl may be added.
