Abstract
The formation of incrustations and caking on hygroscopic material, such as calcium, sodium and ammonium nitrates and table salt, is prevented by admixture with less than 1 per cent of a polymer of a vinyl compound which is polar in character such as acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylic and methacrylic acids and their salts and esters, vinyl acetate, vinyl alcohol and vinyl pyrollidone, the polymer being formed in situ on the hygroscopic material by applying thereto the vinyl monomer which is then polymerized. In this process the monomer may be used as such or as an aqueous solution or emulsion or as a solution in an organic solvent such as acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl and amyl acetates, benzene, toluene, xylenes, methanol and ethanol. In an example an aqueous solution of acrylonitrile containing a mixture of ammonium persulphate and sodium bisulphite as a redox catalyst and a copper or silver salt as an activator is used.ALSO:The formation of incrustations and caking on hygroscopic material, such as calcium, sodium and ammonium nitrates and table salt is prevented by admixture with less than 1 per cent of a polymer of a vinyl compound which is polar in character such as acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylic and metharacrylic acids and their salts and esters, vinyl acetate, vinyl alcohol and vinyl pyrollidone. The polymer may be applied to the hygroscopic material in solid form or in aqueous emulsion or solution, or solution in an organic solvent. Alternatively, the vinyl polymer may be formed in situ on the hygroscopic material by applying thereto the vinyl monomer which is then polymerized.ALSO:The formation of incrustations and caking on hygroscopic fertilizers, such as calcium, sodium and ammonium nitrates is prevented by admixture with less than 1 per cent of a polymer of a vinyl compound which is polar in character such as acrylonitirle, methacrylonitrile, acrylic and methacrylic acids and their salts and esters, vinyl acetate, vinyl alcohol and vinyl pyrollidone. The polymer may be applied to the hygroscopic material in solid form or in aqueous emulsion or solution, or solution in an organic solvent. Alternatively the vinyl polymer may be formed in situ on the hygroscopic material by applying thereto the vinyl monomer which is then polymerized.
