Abstract
A process for treating a halogen-free polymerizable compound containing a CH2=C< (other than acrylonitrile or a homologue thereof) or a mixture of such compounds, to increase the rate at which it will polymerize, which comprises washing the compound(s) with an aqueous oxidizing solution. The subsequent polymerization can be carried out by any known method. Specified oxidizing reagents are solutions of alkali-metal salts (sodium, potassium and ammonium) of perdisulphuric, chromic, dichromic, permanganic, chloric, perchloric, and perboric acids; hydrogen peroxide; peracetic acid; perbenzoic acid; and per-oxygen compounds in general. Suitable ratios of oxidizing solution to monomer are from 1 to 5 parts by weight of 5 per cent oxidizing solution to 1 part of monomer. Polymerizable compounds specified are acrylic acid esters and homologues, vinyl and itaconic esters, styrene; polyhydric alcohol polyesters of acrylic and alpha-substituted acids; olefinic monohydric alcohol esters of unsaturated acids; olefinic monohydric alcohol polyesters of saturated acids; and unsaturated amides such as vinyl acrylamide. In examples a 5 per cent aqueous solution of ammonium perdisulphate is used to wash (1) methyl acrylate, (2) methyl methacrylate, (3) methyl methacrylate containing 2 per cent hydroquinone, (4) ethyl methacrylate, (5) n-propyl methacrylate, (6) vinyl benzoate, (7) vinyl isobutyrate and (8) isobutylene, while a 5 per cent aqueous solution of potassium dichromate is used to wash n-propyl methacrylate.
