Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain methacrylic acid in high yield, by the hydrolysis of the product, obtained by the reaction of acetone cyanohydrin with H2SO4 in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor, maintaining the O2 concentration of the gaseous phase in the hydrolysis vessel at a specific value to inhibit polymerization.
CONSTITUTION: Methacrylic acid is obtained by the hydrolysis of methacrylamide sulfate, prepared by the reaction of acetone cyanohydrin with H2SO4 in an inert gas, e.g. N2, in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor, at 80W150°C for 30 min-5 hr, maintaining the O2 concentration of the gaseous phase in the hydrolysis vessel ≤1 mol%, preferably ≤0.1 mol%.
USE: Monomer of methacrulic acid copolymers useful for paints, adhesives, textile finish, etc.
