Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction between an aliphatic ketone and resorcin at a specific molar ratio is effected in the presence of a specific amount of inorganic acid to produce high-purity title compound useful as a monomer for epoxy resin, asistant for photographic films and others in high yield in a short time.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between 1mol of aliphatic ketone and 1W3mol of resorcin is carried out in the presence of more than 0.5, preferably 1.0W4.0 equivalents, per mol of resorcin, of inorganic acid to give a spirothroman derivative of the formula (R1 is methyl, ethyl; R2 is H, methyl). The optimum reaction temperature is 40W80°C. The inorganic acid is preferably hydrochloric or sulfuric acid. The present invention prevents the formation of flavane derivatives and polymers and gives the objective compound with high selectivity.
