Abstract

Compounds containing a CH2 = C < group are polymerized, e.g. in aqueous media, bulk, or solution, in the presence of a polymerization catalyst consisting of a percompound and an organic compound containing a thiocarbonyl group the carbon atom of which is linked directly to (a) a nitrogen atom and (b) either another nitrogen atom or a carbon atom. Oxygen is preferably removed from the monomer prior to the addition of the catalyst. Specified compounds containing a CH2 = C < group are styrene, vinyl naphthalene, vinyl acetate, vinyl and vinylidene halides, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, and the methyl and ethyl esters of acrylic, methacrylic and alphachloroacrylic acids. Compounds mentioned containing a thiocarbonyl group, which may be in a tautomeric form, are thiourea, N, N1-diethylthiourea, ethylene thiourea, thiouracil, mercaptobenzimidazole, and quinoline-2-thiol. The percompound may be t-butyl hydroperoxide or benzoyl peroxide.
