Abstract

Water-insoluble polymers employed in photographic materials comprise (i) at least 65% by weight of a monomer of formula CH2= CRCOOR1, in which R is H or CH3 and R1 is alkyl, (ii) up to 20% by weight of a monomer of formula CH2=CR1-COOR11-SO3M in which R1 is H or alkyl, R11 has its valence bonds on different carbon atoms and is a divalent hydrocarbon radical or a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical in which the chain of carbon atoms joining the O and S atoms is interrupted by at least one O and/or S atom and M is a cation, e.g. H, an alkali metal, ammonium or an organic amine cation and (iii) 0-20% by weight of a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer that is different from (i) and (ii). Specified components (iii) are acrylo- and methacrylonitrile, styrene, a -methyl styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, methyl vinyl ketone, vinyl acetate, fumaric, maleic and itaconic esters, 2-chloro ethyl vinyl ether, methylene malonitrile, acrylic acid, methacylic acid, dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, N-vinyl-succinimide or phthalimide, Nvinyl pyrrolidone, butadiene isoprene and vinylidene cyanide. The polymers can be prepared by polymerizing the appropriate monomers in a diluent or solvent, e.g. water or a water-alkanol mixture, using catalysts such as hydrogen peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide, azo compounds and redox systems. Specific copolymer combinations are given in the examples.
