Abstract
The cellulose graft copolymer in fibre form has a cellulose skeleton and, grafted thereto, side chains of polymer radicals obtained from polymerisation with opening of double bonds of olefinically unsaturated monomer molecules; these polymer radicals represent from 10.5 to 90% of the total weight of the cellulose graft copolymer. From 10 to 80% of the total weight of the cellulose graft copolymer comprises ionic monomer units and from 0.5 to 60% of the total weight of the cellulose graft copolymer comprises nonionic monomer units; the individual grafted-on polymer radicals can be those built up only from ionic or only from nonionic monomer units or from both types of monomer units, the only essential feature being that the total amount of ionic and nonionic monomer units in the polymer side chains is in the above-mentioned range. These cellulose graft copolymers in fibre form have fibre properties comparable with those of untreated cellulose, and on the other hand have a very high absorption capacity for water and aqueous liquids. They are therefore very highly suitable as a component of absorbent materials, such as bandage materials, menstrual hygiene materials and nappies (diapers).
