Abstract

Water-insoluble crosslinked stiffened starch absorption agents are claimed. The starch is substd. by ionic gps. bound to the starch through ether links and bound with monovalent or divalent counter-ions. The degree of substitution of the crosslinking groups is 0.001-0.04 and the degree of substitution of the ionic groups is such that the crosslinked starch deriv. has a urine retention value of >=6g/g. The prods. have a high absorption value and do not become sticky when fluid has been absorbed, and the absorbed fluid is not expressed from the absorption agent by pressure. The prods. are esp. useful in the prodn. of disposable absorbent aids such as sanitary towels, tampons, nappies, serviettes, etc.
