Abstract

PURPOSE: Acrylic or methacrylic acid is polymerized in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol, and the polymer is neutralized and heat treated, thus producing hydrogel that can absorb a large amount of water and has large gel strength when absorbing water with industrial advantage.
CONSTITUTION: Preferably toluene or the like is used as a dispersant and acrylic or methacrylic acid is polymerized in an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol under stirring. At this time, when necessary, a crosslinking agent that has 2 or more polymerizable unsaturated bondages is added and the crosslinking reaction may be effected simultaneously with the copolymerization. The resulting polymer is neutralized and heat treated or vice versa to produce the objective hydrogel. The weight ratio of polyvinyl alcohol to acrylic or methacrylic acid is preferably 10W90:90W 10.
EFFECT: The product can absorb water more than 100 times the own weight.
