Abstract

Cellulosic textile materials, e.g. fabrics consisting wholly or in part of cotton, regenerated cellulose or cellulose derivatives which contain reactive or replaceable hydrogen atoms, are crease-proofed by treating them in a swollen state with at least one polyfunctional compound able to exist in the form of a crystalloidal aqueous solution and capable of chemically modifying the cellulose together with a catalyst therefor and alwo with at least one water-insoluble polyvinyl substance containing reactive side chains, maintaining them in the swollen state during the treatment withthe polyfunctional compound until reaction betweenthe cellulose and the polyfunctional compound has taken place, removing the catalyst and any unreacted polyfunctional compound by neutralization and/or washing and then drying. Suitable polyfunctional compounds are methylolated nitrogen compounds, e.g. dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea, polyfunctional epoxy compounds, e.g. epichlorhydrin and reactants of a related type, e.g. dichloropropanols, divinyl sulphone, divinyl ketone and formaldehyde. The reactive side chains in the polyvinyl substance may be hydroxyl, carboxyl, amide, methylolamide, alkylated methylolamide, hydrazide, epoxy, vinyl, aziridinyl or isocyanate groups and may be substances prepared by the polymerization of acrylamide, methacrylamide, methylolated acrylamide, methylolated metacrylamide or an ether thereof or by the copolymerization thereof with styrene, acrylic or metacrylic esters, acrylonitrile, vinyl chlorides, vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. The materials may be treated with the polyvinyl substance and polyfunctional compound simultaneously or the two reagents may be applied separately in either order. After treatment with the polyfunctional compound the material may be maintained in the swollen state whilst reaction with the cellulose takes place by wrapping it in a polyethylene sheeting. Specification 905,044 is referred to.
