Abstract

1397595 Bleaching/sterilizing process HOECHST AG 11 Aug 1972 [13 Aug 1971] 37573/ 72 Heading A5G [Also in Divisions Bl and D1] Organic material is bleached by a chlorite irradiated in the presence of water. The chlorite may be sodium or potassium chlorite. The radiation may be ultraviolet light, X-rays, X- rays or electron rays of 4 to 15 MeV. The liquor may have a pH of 10-11. The chlorite may be in the form of a soultion, emulsion, dispersion or paste. The water may be present dispersed in alcohols, perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene, dichloroethylene, fluorohydro carbons, dimethyl formamide or dimethyl sulphoxide. The chlorite can be applied by dipping, padding, doctoring or spraying. The chlorite can be irradiated before, during or after being applied to the organic material, with or without recycling, continuously or batch-wise and at a temperature of -15 to +140‹C. Only a part of the chlorite solution need be irradiated. The bleaching bath may contain hydrogen peroxide, organic or inorganic peroxides chlorine-yielding substances, chlorine dioxide or hypochlorites, ethylene oxide-butylphenol reaction product, ammonia, formic acid, optical brighteners, wetting agents, complex formers, stabilisers, softeners, thickeners, anti-foaming agents, anti-corrosion agents and fibre-protective agents. The organic material may be lace, tulle, flocks, filaments, yarn, threads, looped fabrics, fleece, hosiery, felt, pile fabrics, needled fleece, felt, multicoloured fabrics, and may contain fibres of rayon, rayon cellulose, diacetate, cellulose triacetate, polyesters, polyamides, polycarbonates, polyacrylonitrile, polyolefins, polyvinyl alcohol, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyacetals, polyurethanes, copolymers thereof, wool, linen, cotton, chemically modified cellulose, jute, sisal, alginates, hair, mixtures of natural and synthetic fibres, feathers, leather, leather substitute, paper, combinations of paper or foam with textiles, wallpaper, films, plywood, glue, polymer dispersions, sulphonated paraffin, fats, oil, lacquers or cosmetics. The organic material may be sterilised by the irradiation.
