Abstract

1402326 Bleaching HOECHST AG 29 Sept 1972 [29 Sept 1971] 45088/72 Heading DIP [Also in Division C3] Organic material is bleached by a mixture of chlorite, water and at least 25% wt of an organic compound having at least one group of formula: Specified organic compounds are in the classes: polyalkylene glycols, addition products of ethylene or propylene oxides with active hydrogencontaining organic compounds or the sulphuric, phosphoric or carboxylic acid esters thereof including mono- or polyhydric alcohols, acids, oxyacids, amines, urethanes, amides and phenols. These compounds may include perfluoro-alkyl, phenyl, napthyl, cycloalkyl, triazinyl, alkylene, diphenyl, diphenyl ether moieties, and moieties derived from glycerin, pentaerythol, polyhydric alkanes, sorbitol, mannitol, glucose, saccharose, phthallic acids, trimellitic acid and benzene-hexa-carboxylic acid. The amount of water present may be 0.5- 75% wt. The bleaching may be conducted at a temperature of 0-200‹C at pH less than 7 to 11. Hydrogen peroxide, chlorine-yielding organic substances, chlorine dioxide, or hypochlorites may also be present in the bleaching bath. The bleaching composition may also contain optical brighteners, complex formers, thickeners, antifoaming agents, wetting agents fibre-protective agents. The bleaching composition can be applied as a solution or paste by padding, foaming, spraying, doctoring, exhaust processes, brushing, continuously or discontinuously in J-boxes, boilers, jet-drying apparatus, or a pad-roll bleaching unit. The bleaching process may be combined with an enzymic desizing process and with high energy irradiation as described in Specification 1397595. The material being bleached may be heated by air, infra-red radiation or steam. The material to be bleached may be non-textile organic substances, broderies, tulle, knitted articles, flocks, filaments, yarn, thread, looped fabrics, fleece, felt, glued paper, polyvinyl chloride film, tissue, web, straw, wood pulp, cotton, linen, jute, sisal, cellulose triacetate, cellulose 2¢ acelate, modified cellulose fibres, alginate fibres, wool hair, polyesters, polyamides, polycarbonates, polyacrylonitrile, polyolefins, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacetals, polyurethane, polytetrafluoroethylene, and mixtures thereof.
