Abstract

Vapours from a basic plant, e.g. a distillation column, pass through pipe 10A into the tubes of an air-cooled condenser 11, the mixture of condensate, uncondensed vapours and gases enters pipe 12 and the condensate flows down into separator 13; part of this warm condensate is returned to the basic plant through conduit 18 and the remainder is passed through the tubes of an air-cooled cooler 19; some of the cooled condensate is returned to the basic plant through conduit 22, and the remainder is collected in reservoir 20. The two streams of condensate from conduits 18 and 22 are mixed in pipe 10B for return to the basic plant. The amount and temperature of the condensate delivered to the basic plant is controlled by valves 17, 21 and 23. Uncondensed vapours and gases flow back through pipe 14, rise through condenser 15, and residual gases are vented through valve 28. Condenser <PICT:0902604/III/1> <PICT:0902604/III/2> 11, cooler 19 and reflux condenser 15 are all arranged in a vertical plane in an air-duct 35, which contains a screw-fan 37. This fan blows air towards the condensers and the cooler 19. Part of the air blown through duct 35 can be diverted to the atmosphere by adjustable baffle 38; but this baffle is arranged so that the reflux condenser is exposed to the full volume of applied air. The cooling air is deflected over the condenser and the cooler by baffles 40 and 41, respectively. The flow of air over the cooler is regulated by louvre 42.
