901,024. Air - cooled heat - exchangers. HAPPEL G.m.b.H., [trading as GEA LUFTKUHLERGESELLSCHAFT HAPPEL G.m.b.H. & CO. KOMM.-GES.]. March 10, 1959, No. 8278/59. Class 64 (3). [Also in Group XII] In apparatus in which a stream of air cooled by moistening is forced by a fan 3 over finned heat exchange elements 1, 2, carrying a gas or liquid to be cooled or steam to be condensed, spray nozzles 14, 15 are arranged at the suction side of the fan and means for trapping and separating entrained liquid are arranged between the fan and the heat exchange elements and extend at most only slightly into the path of the air. In the form shown, entrained liquid in the stream of cooling air is thrown by the fan on to the wall of the fan housing 12 whence it is carried to the upper end of the housing and over a rim 12a forming the lower boundary of a slot 24, the upper boundary of the slot being formed by the lower projecting edge of a conical member 10. Separated liquid passing through the slot 24 is collected in a channel 25 whence it flows through a drain conduit 26 into a floatcontrolled reservoir 21. Liquid is supplied to the nozzles 14, 15 from the reservoir by a pump 20. Any separated liquid which fails to enter slot 24 flows downwardly and is collected in a channel 27 from which it is directed to the reservoir through a conduit 28. A further form of apparatus is described in which the fan rotates on a horizontal axis and in which the heat exchange elements extend vertically.
