Abstract

A plant for concentrating or cooling a liq. by evapn. incorporates a vertical cylindrical column with a suction fan at the top and a liq. atomiser and an air intake at the bottom. The discharge of the fan goes to a cyclone in which the cooled or conc. liq. is recovered and from which the humid air is discharged. The fan reduces the press. in the column by ca 30 millibars. A syphon connected to the bottom of the cyclone compensates for the depression in the cyclone. The fan is in the top of the cyclone. The liq. atomiser consists of a funnel-shaped vessel with a liq. inlet pipe at the bottom and a constant level pipe. The air is admitted by a pipe which passes through the vessel and has a number of venturi type tubes connected to it. Alternatively it may be a feed pipe entering tangentially a cylinder closed at the bottom and with a disc at the top perforated by a central hole. The plant is more efficient and economical than existing plants because there are no complex and costly contact surfaces as there are in existing cooling towers, and because the operation is carried out at lower pressures than in existing plants.
