Abstract
1,220,886. Evaporative heat exchangers. BALTIMORE AIRCOIL CO. Inc. 8 Aug., 1968 [16 Feb., 1968; 8 March, 1968; 20 May, 1968], No. 62126/69. Divided out of 1,220,884. Heading F4K. Relates to evaporative heat exchangers having surface-presenting means where heat is extracted by evaporation from a fluid to be cooled or condensed, the particular form of heat exchanger described being a cooling tower in which water discharged by sprays 17 on to the surface-presenting means (i.e. packing) 18 is cooled by evaporation in contact with an air stream, the surplus water collecting in a sump located in a region below the surface-presenting means. According to the invention a duct 122 discharges air blown by a fan 129 into said region in which is located a baffle 148 presenting to the discharge mouth of said duct a concave face extending in an arc of more than 90 degrees the lower edge 150 of the baffle projecting into the air stream issuing from the duct and the upper edge 151 of the baffle terminating above the upper extremity of the duct mouth. As shown, the baffle prevents drainage of water into the air duct, said drainage being assisted by sloping the duct into the sump region. The baffle also, in co-operation with a further baffle 153 acts to distribute the air flow uniformly into the surface-presenting means 18. Several units may be joined in a single apparatus in a back-to-back or side-byside arrangement (Fig. 2). Specifications 1,220,884 and 1,220,885 are referred to.
