Abstract

869,638. Contacting gases with liquid. FLUOR CORPORATION Ltd. Dec. 23,1957, No. 39919/57. Class 55 (2). [Also in Group XIII] Water passes from a header 21 to branches 22 to be sprayed from nozzles 14 over grid packing 16 and is cooled by air drawn up by a fan 23 in a top stack 24, through side louvres 15 and the packing 16 at up to 2200 feet per minute and then through inclined water-detraining baffles arranged in three annular layers 31, 32, 33. The baffles, which are inclined transversely in opposite directions in successive layers, Fig. 2, at an inclination which may vary from layer to layer, direct the air into the fan 23, in a spiral course opposite to the direction of fan rotation. A longitudinal groove 40, near the lower edge of each baffle, conducts the detrained water to a central conical support 36 mounted on a tubular column 35 (supported from the floor 18 of the cooling tower or from the water distribution system). It flows into a ftmnel 37, whence it may overflow or pass into the column 35 and out through a bottom opening 39 on to the floor 18. A pump 19 passes the water back to the top header 21. The top baffles 33 are said to be only so wet on their undersides that the moisture is not re-entrained by the air. A motor 25 drives the fan 23 through a gear assembly 28 supported by the tubular column 35.
