Abstract

902,335. Electric flow heaters. ECKERFELD, A. Dec. 12, 1958 [Dec. 14, 1957], No. 40099/58. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group XXXVII] A heater unit 18 of an electric continuousflow heater for water is removable from a body 1 of plastic and has two channels 5, 5<SP>1</SP> which contain a heating coil 6. The channels open into a chamber 7 closed by a bimetallic diaphragm 11, channel 5 being connected to water inlet 2 and channel 5<SP>1</SP> to outlet 9. Diaphragm chambers 20, 22 are connected by passages 21, 24 to channels 3, 8 respectively, and an adjustable throttle 4 projects into the inlet channel 3. A second diaphragm 10 is provided above the bimetallic diaphragm 11 and operates a transmission member 28 which controls contact springs 30. The diaphragm 11 actuates a transmission member 25 for controlling contact springs 27. In operation, the pressure developed in the chamber 20 due to the water entering via the passage 21 causes the diaphragm 10 to rise and the supply circuit to the heating coil 6 to be completed through springs 30, contacts 31, 31<SP>1</SP> and springs 27. Should excess pressure due to steam be generated in the channels 5, 5<SP>1</SP> and chamber 7, the diaphragm 11 is pushed upwards and the circuit is broken at contacts 31<SP>1</SP>. The diaphragm 11 also causes the circuit to be broken if the water in the chamber 7 is overheated. The member 25 is automatically latched by a spring 32 after the member has broken the circuit at contacts 31<SP>1</SP>.
