Abstract

902,314. Photographic diffusion-transfer procedures. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORPORATION. Nov. 3, 1960 [Nov. 23, 1959], No. 37838/60. Class 98 (2). To produce silver transfer images of improved stability and reduced stain, development is effected with a first developer which may .be contained in the photo-sensitive element and which does not cause transfer to the image receiving stratum or element, and the transferred soluble silver complex is reduced with a second, volatile, silver halide developing agent. A product for the purpose has an element including a silver halide emulsion and the first developing agent, a rupturable container with processing composition including the second developing agent, a silver-receptive imagereceiving element, and silver halide solvent in one of the elements or in the composition. Preferably the composition is such as to produce a solidified layer on the receiving layer, but it is also contemplated to perform the process to cause such layer to adhere to the developed negative. In a first example, an exposed emulsion is processed in a standard metolhydroquinone developer and then processed again in the dark and without being fixed in a viscous solution comprising sodium hydroxide, thiosulphate and carboxymethyl cellulose with N,N-diethylhydroxylamine as the second developing agent whilst superposed on an imagereceiving element, which latter with the solidified layer of processing composition is later stripped off the emulsion. A second example uses an emulsion overcoated with a gelatin solution containing 4<SP>1</SP>-methyl-phenyl-hydroquinone and the transfer is effected with the viscous solution of Example 1 only, and a third example repeats this but with omission of the N,N-diethylhydroxylamine to show, for comparison purposes, only a pale positive image. The use of other volatile hydroxylamines for the procedure is indicated. Specifications 684,592, 752,409, 775,322, 789,837 and 902,313 are referred to.
