Abstract
879,171. Photographic diffusion-transfer processes. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORPORATION. May 9, 1958 [June 5, 1957], No. 14950/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 98(2) Monochrome and multicolour image transfer from an exposed light-sensitive layer or layers to a receiving layer is effected with aid of at least two processing liquids, one of which is applied between transfer surfaces, as from a container carried by one of these, and another of which is applied externally, normally to penetrate a layer support before attaining operative position. For silver image transfer a container is preferably attached to the receiving layer, and drawings (not shown) illustrate a camera with accommodation for roll films having areas respectively for latent and transfer. images, and containers appropriately carried so that passage of the superimposed layers through pressure rollers after exposure will release liquid for some stage of processing, after which a door in the camera may be opened and a second liquid applied by an applicator swab to the support side of the receiving layer; subsequent withdrawal from the camera and separation of the layers enables viewing of the festive transfer image. The second processing liquid may, however, be applied as by immersion outside the camera. A reversal developer mixing is quoted for the first of these liquids and a stabilizer for the second, this consisting of 1 % of gold chloride in equal parts of water and methyl alcohol. For colour image transfer a sensitive layer of screen formation may be used, but preferably there are several sensitive layers containing colour providing substances in the sequence of normal subtractive multilayer film, and a processing-liquid container may be attached to the immediate side of the transfer material or to both sides, in which case a further layer is present to facilitate spreading of the liquid, and in both of which cases liquid may be also applied externally so that either two or three successive processings may be effected. Application of liquid from a container introduced into the bite of pressure rollers or introduced in other manners is referred to also. The colour providing substances and processing liquids therefor are such as to release colour for transfer at some stage of the process, thus reducible dyes, coupling dyes, metallic complexes of dyes, colour couplers, colour formers which are esters for hydrolysation, couplers for treatment with diazonium salts, dye developers and other materials for use in the layers are mentioned, with references to other Specifications such as Specifications 853,478 and 853,480 for definite disclosures; and developing agents, thiosulphates, alkalis, reducing agents and oxidizing agents are mentioned for inclusion in one or other of the liquids for action on these colour providing substances. Specifications 684,592, 732,420 and 804,976 also are referred to.
