Abstract
In the production of nickel carbonyl by reducing oxidic nickel-containing material, introducing sulphur into the reduced material to give a sulphur content of 0,8 to 2,5% by weight and treating the resultant sulphur-containing reduced material with carbon monoxide at atmospheric or fairly low superatmospheric pressure, e.g. 5 atmospheres, the reduction is effected at 350 DEG to 500 DEG C., with the introduction of sulphur if necessary, to yield a reduced material containing a minor proportion of the final sulphur content, amounting to at least 0,3%, e.g. 0,4 to 0,8%, the remainder of the final sulphur content being introduced into the reduced material at below 300 DEG C. during reduction. Sulphur may be introduced by adding SO2 or other gaseous sulphiding agent, e.g. H2S, to the reducing gas employed, or by adding elemental sulphur, or reduction may be carried out using water gas containing sulphur, or the oxidic nickel-containing material may be an incompletely roasted material containing some or all of the minor proportion of sulphur. The introduction of sulphur into the reduced material may be effected by treating it with hydrogen containing between 0,5 and 25% SO2 at a temperature of 60 DEG to 300 DEG C., e.g. 100 DEG -200 DEG C.
