Abstract

In a process for producing nickel carbonyl by reducing oxidic nickel-containing material, introducing sulphur thereinto and treating the reduced material containing from 0,8-2,5% by weight of sulphur with carbon monoxide, the introduction of sulphur is effected by treating the reduced material with a mixture of hydrogen and sulphur dioxide containing between 0,5 and 25% by volume of sulphur dioxide at a temperature between 60 DEG and 300 DEG C. Preferably the temperature of sulphiding with the hydrogen/sulphur dioxide mixture is between 100 DEG and 200 DEG C. The sulphur dioxide content of the mixture may be between 0,5 and 5% by weight.
