Abstract
Hydrogen and sulphur are obtained from hydrogen sulphide by passing it into contact with a lower sulphide of iron, cobalt, or nickel to form hydrogen and a higher sulphide of the metal, which, after removal of the hydrogen, is heated to liberate sulphur and regenerate the lower sulphide. The contacting of hydrogen sulphide with the lower sulphide may be at elevated temperature, e.g. 500 DEG F. to 1,000 DEG F. The higher sulphide may be heated at a temperature above 1,300 DEG F. and the sulphur removed by a stream of inert gas, e.g. carbon dioxide, and/or nitrogen, or it may be heated in vacuo. The lower sulphide may be a monosulphide and the higher a bisulphide. The lower sulphide may be alone or supported on a carrier, e.g. bauxite, alumina, or silica gel. The hydrogen sulphide may be an impurity in a gas, e.g. natural hydrocarbon gas.
