Abstract

902,010. Sails; parachutes. CARLTON TYRE SAVING CO. Ltd. April 24, 1959, No. 14042/59. Classes 4 and 115. A sail or parachute has a large area, i.e. not less than 25% of its total area, made up of an arrangement of material which substantially prevents the passage of air and air spaces through which air can flow freely at low speeds, the air spaces being distributed over said large area, the proportion of material to air spaces being between 30% to 70% and 70% to 30%, and the distance between the air spaces in the large area being less than 20 inches. Figs. 2 and 3 show the hull A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP> respectively of a ship with a spinnaker B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> with a large area comprising strips of fabric H, H<SP>1</SP> through which air does not pass readily and air spaces J, J<SP>1</SP>, said strips being kept in position by tapes K, K<SP>1</SP>. In Figs. 3 and 8 the " large area " comprises the whole area of the spinnaker. In Fig. 8, holes J<SP>3</SP> are distributed over the spinnaker B<SP>4</SP>. Fig. 9 is a plan view of a falling parachute L with concentric strips of fabric H<SP>6</SP> separated by air spaces J<SP>7</SP> and held in position by narrow strips of fabric K<SP>6</SP>.
