Abstract
1,186,631. Parachutes. P. M. LEMOIGNE. 29 Feb., 1968 [3 March, 1967], No. 9769/68. Heading B7G. A parachute designed to glide in a specified direction 20 has a canopy comprising square panels 22, each edge of a panel being reinforced by a ribbon 2, 4 sewn to both that panel and an adjacent panel, the ribbons 2, 4 extending across the canopy some 2 parallel, and others 4 normal to the direction 20, at least some 24, 26 of the panels having apertures allowing air to escape from the interior to the exterior of the canopy in the opposite direction 18 to the direction 20 to thereby provide the directional gliding. The canopy may be polygonal having rigging lines attached to the corners, near which a pair of perpendicular ribbons 2, 4 intersect. There may be an extractor parachute 42 mounted above a central chimney formed by an opentopped truncated pyramid 38. The panels at the edge may be of lower porosity than the panels at the centre Some 24<SP>1</SP>, 46, 48, 56 of the parachute panels may each have openings at both the front and the rear, the edge of the rear opening being connected to a control line to enable a parachutist to reverse the direction of flow through the openings, to produce a braking effect. Also the control lines on each side of the canopy may be connected together so that differential operation can be used to steer the parachute. The control lines may be sheathed in sleeves formed of the panel material.
