A parachute canopy has two symmetrically disposed openings in its forward part, and means whereby a parachutist can vary their relative shapes and sizes in flight. The openings may be slits between adjacent gores, or may be formed by omitting the lower parts 20, 21 of gores 22, 23. Control rings 41, 43 are attached by control lines 45, 47 to the rigging lines leading to the forward edges of the openings, 'and these rings may be similarly attached to openings 18, 19, preferably L-shaped, in the rear of the canopy. An opening 12 may be provided centrally at the rear of the canopy to ensure that the parachute drifts forwardly, and the rear section, between the openings 18, 19, may be movable vertically by manipulating rigging lines 53, 54 at its edges, these rigging lines passing through rings 35, 37 attached to the hem cord of the rest of the canopy. Further openings 29-33 may be provided in the forward part of the canopy, and the openings 18, 19, 20, 21 could alternatively be provided with flaps to vary their shapes and sizes.
