Abstract

1,181,279. Parachutes. G. Q. PARACHUTE CO. Ltd. 5 June, 1968 [30 June, 1967], No. 30197/67. Heading B7G. A parachute has a substantially triangular canopy 11, consisting of a number of strips 18- 24 arranged across the canopy, the strips 22-24 providing wings 59, 60. Rigging lines are attached to the risers 14, 15, 16, 17 of a parachute harness. The canopy flies with strip 18 forward and the front edge folded back to form a pocket (Fig. 5, not shown), the strips 18-20 are joined over the whole of their lengths, but strips .21-24 are joined to their adjacent strip for a part only of their length so as to leave apertures between the strips, the leading edges of the apertures being formed by folding back the material of some of these strips (Fig. 6, not shown). The strips 21-24 are provided with control vanes, such as 44-55, which are connected by control rigging (48, 49), (Fig. 3, not shown) to the risers 14, 16, and are used to control the aperture size and shape, and hence the parachute in flight. The canopy is provided with a keel consisting of a number of triangular vanes 25-30 attached to the strips 19-24 and the bell lines 31-37 are attached to the harness. In another embodiment the keel vanes are also attached to the canopy strips, Fig. 10, the strips 21-24 overlap, the material not being folded back (Fig. 12, not shown) and no control vanes are provided. The canopy is steered by control lines from the corners 66-69 of the wings 59, 60; a continuous line 78, 79 passes through a ring (80), (Fig. 13, not shown), on the harness, shortening line 78 by means of the lines (83), (82), (Fig. 13, not shown), lengthens 79 and causes turning. Operation of both wings at once causes the canopy to brake.
