Abstract

890,418. Controlling aircraft. AVIATION, MINISTER OF. Feb. 17, 1960 [Nov. 18, 1958], No. 37146/58. Class 4. A flying control on a delta-winged aircraft comprises means for blowing fluid to break-up at least one of the two main lift vortices shed from and passing over the upper surface of the wing thereby providing means to control the aircraft in roll. The cores of the vortices VL and VR are broken-up by fluid jets J issuing from holes L and R respectively. Valves TL and TR control the supply of fluid to the holes L and R from a source S, which may be the aircraft's prime mover or an additional motor such as a cordite rocket motor. The blowing may be controlled by the rudder, the strength of the jets varying with rudder angle. In alternative arrangements, one central orifice on the wing surface may be provided with means to direct the fluid jet to break-up one or other of the vortex cores, or there may be a line of holes situated under each of the vortex cores.
