Abstract

1314579 Aerofoils; sails ETUDES ET FABRICATIONS AERONAUTIQUES 5 Aug 1970 [8 Aug 1969] 37768/70 Headings B7G and B7V An aerofoil for use as a parachute canopy, aircraft wing or boat sail, comprises at least in part a plurality of nozzle pockets 1 each of generally pyramidal form and each constructed from a plurality of panels one of which has a free edge which partly defines an escape orifice through which air is exhausted, as shown by the arrows 51, to produce lift and thrust. As shown, a parachute canopy 50 is also provided with elongate pyramidal pockets 11 each formed by three panels, and half conical pockets 30 each formed by two panels. Both types of pyramidal pocket also have an air vent in the top of the pocket to form an anti-shock opening. Brake pockets of pyramidal form having only an air vent are also described, Fig. 8 (not shown). Shroud lines 61 enable the area of the escape orifices to be varied to steer the parachute and to control the rate of descent. In a modification applied to a publicity sail (63), Fig. 11 (not shown), the escape orifices of each of pyramidal pockets (1a) is divided in two by a band (65). Lines (60) on which balls (64) are mounted, enable the shape of the centre of the sail (63) to be modified.
